In 1947 the Tower Theater was built in Melba, Idaho. For years this small theater entertained the small town, hosting blockbuster films like “Mighty Joe Young”. In the mid 1950’s the theater had to close down due to dwindling business. In 1957, the Walter’s Butte Grange purchased the building for $7500 dollars and began holding their regular meetings, fundraisers, and community events there. In 2013, the Walter’s Butte Grange decided to close it’s charter due to a lack of membership. For the next months, the body of believers at Melba Friends Church prayed that, if it were the Lord’s will, the building would be become ours so we could extend our outreach into the community of Melba. On March 24th, the Idaho State Grange sold the building to Melba Friends Church for a very low cost! Our work now centers around getting the building up to code to be effectively useful for two main purposes:
1. Be a home for the continually growing MFCYG (Melba Friends Church Youth Group) ministries as well as an extended place for worship and classes.
2. Be available as a Community Theater complete with HD projector and screen, wonderful sound and stage lighting. The hope in establishing the Community Theater aspect is that it can be a place where the increasingly diverse community of Melba can gather together in joy and fun as we work to build a deeper sense of the genuine community that has long been a part of our town’s history.
The Melba Community Auction has already shown tremendous support for the Community Theater aspect and we are very grateful for their support of our vision.
